Ariane

Proud Rotterdam citizen Ariane Nooteboom (39) left her job at the European Parliament to set up her dedicated Inside Rotterdam touring agency.

Sociologist: As a sociologist, Ariane is particularly interested in the behaviour of city people. She tries to explain the changes in a city, analysing behaviour and revealing the underlying structure of communities.

Library: She spends many hours scrutinising anything that has been written about her city in order to explain why things are as they are. That is how, as a guide, she enables people to see the city 'with new eyes'.

The Wild West Cycling tour: 'My alternative tour in which you will get to know not just the cosmopolitan and raw, but also the creative character of Rotterdam West'.

Question 1 of 3

Where can I find the raw, experimental fringes of Rotterdam?

Thanks to the ample space that the city still has to offer, Rotterdam attracts many young creative makers and thinkers. M4H, the traditional Merwe-Vierhavens port area, is home to numerous businesses. Rainmaker is one of them; they are investigating how humidity can be extracted from the air, ensuring access to water in drier times or areas. De Sponstuin of The Urbanists is another example. Here, they are experimenting with the cultivation of crops that can survive in spite of disastrous conditions like waterlogging or extreme heat. The circular Stadhavenbrouwerij, which offers guided tours, is also surprisingly innovative.

The number of green roofs is increasing in the city; what is so specifically Rotterdam about that?
