Are the suburbs also representative of Rotterdam's architectural boldness?

Really adventurous do-rists should visit the Kiefhoek, a residential area in South. The style of the rented social housing, dating from the 1920s, stands out prominently among the dwellings built with more typically Dutch brown bricks. In Tuindorp, too, you can find this type of house, the design of which is entirely in keeping with the rules of 'De Stijl'. The famous architect J.P. Oud designed these spacious homes for working-class families with limited resources; yet another revolutionary idea. As a guide, it has been my experience that you can easily connect with the residents when strolling through Kiefhoek, and although one of the houses is a dedicated museum which can be visited by appointment, the chances are that a resident will invite you to come in and have a look round their home. This hospitality is absolutely typical of Rotterdam; irrespective of the length of your stay, as a visitor, you are bound to become a temporarily member of the community.
